Dewa Mela 2023: Dewa Sharif, often referred to simply as Dewa, is a town and a nagar panchayat located in the Barabanki district of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This town is renowned for the sacred shrine of Haji Waris Ali Shah and is affectionately known as Dewa Sharif in honor of this revered site. Dewa is situated approximately 26 kilometers to the northeast of the state capital, Lucknow.
The state government has officially designated Dewa Sharif as a town with a linguistic minority community, where individuals who speak Urdu make up 15 percent or more of the local population. Dewa Sharif has been included as one of the significant locations in the Heritage Arc of Uttar Pradesh.
Dewa Mela 2023 Program List
The descendants of the Sufi saint Haji Waris Ali Shah, commonly known as Dada Miyan, organize programs at the revered Sayyad Kurban Ali Shah shrine located in the Dewa Sharif’s exhibition ground. This event conveys a message of brotherhood and social unity.
During Dewa mela program, thousands of people gather to witness and experience the grand palanquin procession. Every year, in the month of Safar, the Urs (annual commemoration) of the saint’s sacred tomb is celebrated. In memory of Haji Waris Ali Shah’s father, they also host a significant fair known as the Dewa Mela in the Kartik month.
The religious programs at the shrine will commence on October 31st. Syed Ayan Gani, son of the shrine’s custodian, Haji Usman Gani Shah, informed that on October 31st, a procession with offerings will be presented at the tomb of Dada Miyan on behalf of Haji Usman Gani Shah. On November 1st, a gathering for Milad and the observance of Shohada-e-Karbala will take place at the shrine of Ali Ahmad Shah, also known as Kallan Miyan. On November 2nd, the grand palanquin procession will be held.
The government officials will participate in the palanquin procession of Waris Pak and then present themselves in the court of the shrine’s custodian, Haji Usman Gani Shah. Following this, they will offer a chadar at the tomb of Kurban Ali Shah, also known as Dada Miyan. The customs of the entire shrine of the Dada Miyan will be observed. At 11 PM at night, there will be a Sufi music gathering at the shrine of Ali Ahmad Shah, also known as Kallan Miyan.
On November 3, there will be a Sufi music gathering and the custodianship of Khadim Ali Shah. Later in the night, there will be a qawwali performance. At three o’clock in the morning, the Quran Khwani will take place, followed by the congregation of Haji Waris Ali Shah’s custodianship at 4:45 AM.
On November 4, at 9 AM, the descendants of Saiyad Ibrahim Shah, Saiyad Ali Ahmad Shah alias Kallan Miyan, Saiyad Wasi Ahmad Shah alias Shabban Miyan, and others will participate. On November 6, there will be the bathing ceremony of the shrine of Hazrat Kurban Ali Shah, also known as Dada Miyan, and the distribution of offerings to the devotees.
Highlights of Fair and Exhibition
The Dewa Fair, a significant pilgrimage for people across the nation visiting the revered mausoleum of the great Saint, gains momentum with the traditional Chadar presentation on the graves of Haji Waris Ali Shah and his father. Elaborately embroidered Varanasi Silk sheets are laid on the resting places of Haji Sahab and his father, Haji Qurban Ali Shah.
These embroidered sheets are transported in silver platters during a grand procession. Skilled singers perform Qawwalis and religious songs throughout the journey as the procession proceeds to the mausoleums. Pilgrims also carry Chadar offerings while singing their way to the shrines.
The Dewa Mela holds significant attractions for the rural population. The prominent feature of the fair is the vast cattle market, which serves as its primary source of revenue. This cattle market is subdivided into different sections, each designated for specific animal species.
