1. Somnath Jyotirlinga – Saurashtra Gujarat

Somnath is a highly revered Jyotirlinga in India and is considered the foremost among the twelve aadi jyotirlingas. This pilgrimage site, located in the Kathiawad region of Gujarat, is famous for its temple architecture which resembles the Chalukya style. According to the Shiv Purana, the moon god, Chandra, worshipped Lord Shiva at this shrine in order to regain his lost lustre and beauty after being cursed by Dakshin Prajapati. Lord Shiva appeared here as a sizzling column of light and granted Chandra his wish. Ever since, Lord Shiva has been worshipped here as Somnath.

2. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga – Darukavanam, Gujarat

Nageshwar is a popular Jyotirlinga temple located on the coast of Saurashtra in Gujarat, between Gomati Dwarka and Bait Dwarka. Devotees from all over the country visit the temple of Nagnath round the year to seek blessings from the holy shrine of Nageshwar Mahadev, which is located in an underground sanctum. 3. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga – Pune in Maharashtra

The Bhimashankar temple is a stunning black rock structure with the Nagara architectural pattern. The temple is located on the banks of the River Bhima. According to legend, it was built by Bheema, the son of Kumbhakarna, and is one of the twelve jyotirlingas in Maharashtra. 4. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga – Nashik in Maharashtra

The Trimbakeshwar jyotirlinga is situated near the Brahmagiri mountain, which is the origin of the Godavari River, also known as Gautami Ganga. As per the Shiv Purana, the Godavari River and Gautami Rishi requested Lord Shiva to dwell in this place, and thus the God manifested in the form of Trimbakeshwar. The most distinctive feature of this jyotirlinga is its shape. Instead of a conventional shrine, there is a void with three pillars installed inside. 5. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga – Aurangabad in Maharashtra

The Grishneshwar temple, one of the 12 jyotirlingas mentioned in the Shiva Purana, is located near the Ajanta and Ellora caves and boasts an impressive red rock structure in the Shikhara architectural style with carvings of various Gods and Goddesses. It also features a massive Nandi Bull in the main courtyard hall. The temple, also known as Gru Someswara and Kusum Eswarar, was constructed by Ahilyabai Holkar. Temple Opening Time: Devotees can visit the temple for darshan and puja between 5:30 AM to 9:30 PM, and during the month of shravan, darshan timings are from 3 PM to 11 PM. Usually, it takes a couple of hours for darshan. However, during the month of shravan, there is a massive influx of pilgrims, and darshan may take 6 to 8 hours to complete.

6. Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga – Deoghar in Jharkhand

Vaidyanath, also known as Baidyanath or Vaijinath, is a highly revered jyotirlinga among the 12 jyotirlinga in India, and it is also one of the 52 shakti pethas shrines of Sati in Hinduism. According to mythological stories, Ravana worshiped Shiva for years and invited him to Lanka. Shiva appeared as a shivalinga and instructed Ravana not to place it on the ground until he reached Lanka. However, Vishnu interrupted Ravana and convinced him to rest the shivalinga for a while. Ravana disobeyed Shiva’s instructions, and since then, the shivalinga has been worshipped as Vaidyanath in Deoghar. This shrine of Shiva is very popular among devotees and is believed to help them get rid of all their miseries and attain moksha and salvation.

7. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga – Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh

8. Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga – Rameswaram Island in Tamil Nadu

The temple of Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga is considered to be worshiped by Lord Rama after his triumph over Ravana. As the southernmost jyotirlinga in the country, the temple is encompassed by the sea and is renowned for its exquisite architecture, embellished corridors, and 36 theerthams.

9. Kedarnath Jyotirlinga – Kedarnath in Uttarakhand

The Kedarnath Jyotirlinga, located in the Rudra Himalayan Range at an altitude of 1200 feet, is considered one of the four dhams in Hinduism. The temple remains closed for six months during winter due to heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions and is open only from May to June. Pilgrims visiting Kedarnath first visit Gangotri and Yamunotri to take holy water, which they offer to the Kedarnath shivalinga.
