Police Rank List

The “Police Rank List” is a hierarchical structure that defines the ranks and positions within a police force. It establishes a clear chain of command and outlines the authority and responsibilities associated with each rank.

In the Indian Police Services, the highest-ranking officer is the Director General of Police (DGP). The rank of Commissioner of Police is also held by the Director General of Police (DGP) or Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), or in certain states and zones, by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) or Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP).

The police department consists of two categories of officials: gazetted rank police officers and non-gazetted police officers. The gazetted rank officers hold higher positions and are responsible for key administrative and operational roles, while the non-gazetted officers play crucial roles in day-to-day law enforcement activities.

The gazetted officers encompass all officers of the Indian Police Service, who hold Group A positions within the cadre, as well as officers from the State Police Services ranked at and above the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The non-gazetted ranks comprise Inspectors of Police, as well as lower ranks such as Sub-Inspectors and Constables. Police rank list with salary is given below.
