According to Sources within the Union Health Ministry have revealed that 18 firms have had their licenses cancelled and have been instructed to halt their production, although the identities of these firms were not disclosed. Furthermore, 26 companies were issued show-cause notices and their products were also subject to scrutiny.

Out of the 209 firms located in 20 states that have been marked for inspection by the government, the 76 units examined in the initial phase were a part of this group. According to senior officials, 18 pharmaceutical companies have had their licences for producing counterfeit medicines revoked by the Health Ministry. This action was taken after the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) inspected 76 such establishments across 20 different states.

Businessline’s sources have reported that a total of 203 pharmaceutical companies, most of which are based in India, have been identified for action. The majority of these companies, with 70 in total, are from Himachal Pradesh, followed by Uttarakhand with 45 and Madhya Pradesh with 23.

The initial phase of the operation spanned the last 15 days and encompassed several states, namely Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.

An official reported that, according to sources, the product permissions of three companies have been revoked in addition to the licences of 18 pharmaceutical companies. These actions were taken due to the companies’ failure to adhere to good manufacturing practices and for producing medicines that are of substandard quality, as well as spurious or adulterated products. As a result, those companies whose licences have been revoked will be required to cease their operations.

In recent times, India’s pharmaceutical industry has come under scrutiny globally due to reports of adverse health effects and alleged deaths in some countries after consuming certain cough syrups and other medications. Ministry officials stated that targeted actions were being taken in numerous cases in response to complaints.

Officials from the Health Ministry have stated that during these special operations, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) typically discovers that 2-3% of the samples tested are positive for adulteration or for non-compliance with good manufacturing practices.
