The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to ban 232 online betting and loan apps banned in India. These apps have been found to violate Section 69 of the IT Act and have third-party links with China. Additionally, the betting apps have been accused of actively debt-trapping users.
The Ministry of Home Affairs initiated an investigation into these apps after several cases of suicide were reported in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The investigation found that the loan apps in India were engaging in debt-trapping practices, with interest rates increasing by up to 3,000%.

The Indian government has identified additional apps that pose a threat to the nation’s integrity and sovereignty and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is set to ban betting and loan apps in India. This follows the government’s previous ban on several Chinese apps due to security concerns. Many Indian loan apps were found to be exploiting financially-strapped users for money.
The list of banned apps includes 138 gambling apps and unauthorized loan apps. All of these apps have third-party links with China, which suggests that they may have the potential to compromise sensitive user data and lead users into traps.
