Chief Minister of any state in India is elected through a majority in the state legislative assembly by vote of confidence. Under Article 163 of Indian Constitution, Chief Minister along with other ministers take oath and affirmation before the Governor of that particular state. Each state of India whether it is Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan etc. has its elected CM.

The primary responsibility of the Chief Minister is to represent their state at the national level and work for the welfare of the citizens. CM has the responsibility of implementing welfare schemes including health, education along with maintaining law and order in the society. 1. Y.S Jagan Mohan Reddy

Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy, also known as Y. S. Jagan or mononymously Jagan, is an Indian politician serving as the 17th and current chief minister of Andhra Pradesh since 2019. He is also the founder and president of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). He is the son of the former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy. He had served as the leader of opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly between 2014 and 2019.

2. Pema Khandu

Pema Khandu is an Indian politician and the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. He is son of former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Dorjee Khandu. Since assuming office of chief minister in July 2016, he and his government have twice changed their party affiliation; in September from the Indian National Congress to the Peoples Party of Arunachal, and then in December 2016 to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Previously he had served as Minister of Tourism, Urban Development and Water Resources in Nabam Tuki’s government.

3. Himanta Biswa Sarma

Himanta Biswa Sarma is an Indian politician serving as the 15th and incumbent Chief Minister of Assam. A former member of the Indian National Congress political party, Sarma defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having first been elected in 2001.

5. Bhupesh Baghel

Bhupesh Baghel is an Indian politician serving as the third and current Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. 8. Manohar Lal Khattar

Manohar Lal Khattar is an Indian politician serving as the 10th and current chief minister of Haryana. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a former RSS pracharak. He represents Karnal constituency in Haryana Legislative Assembly. He was sworn in for the first time as Chief Minister of Haryana on 26 October 2014 after BJP’s win in the 2014 Haryana Legislative Assembly election. He was sworn in a second time as the chief minister on 27 October 2019 after making an alliance with Jannayak Janta Party post-2019 Haryana Legislative Assembly election with Dushyant Chautala as his deputy chief minister.

9. Jai Ram Thakur

Jai Ram Thakur is an Indian politician, who currently serves as the Chief Minister of the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. He is a 5th time MLA in Himachal Pradesh Assembly winning continuously since 1998 and has previously served as a Cabinet Minister in the BJP Government of Himachal Pradesh. He was the Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj from 2009 to 2012. He is elected to Himachal Pradesh Assembly from Seraj Assembly constituency of Mandi district. 10. Hemant Soren

Hemant Soren is an Indian politician from Jharkhand, who is the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Previously, he had also served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand from July 2013 to December 2014. He is also the president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a political party in Jharkhand. He represents Barhait constituency in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly.

11. Basavaraj Bommai

Basavaraj Somappa Bommai is an Indian politician and engineer who is the current and 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is Member of Legislative Assembly in the legislature of Karnataka for Shiggaon, from where he has been elected three times since 2008. A graduate in Mechanical engineering, Bommai started his political career with the Janata Dal.

Between 1998 and 2008, he was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council. He served as Minister for Water Resources and Cooperation between 2008 and 2013. Bommai served as Minister of Home Affairs, Co-operation, Law and Justice, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislature of Karnataka in the Fourth Yediyurappa ministry. He also served as Minister in charge of Haveri and Udupi districts. On 28 July 2021, he succeeded B. S. Yediyurappa as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

12. Pinarayi Vijayan

Pinarayi Vijayan is an Indian politician who is the current Chief Minister of Kerala, serving since 25 May 2016. He is the longest serving Chief Minister of Kerala in the history of Kerala governance. A member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he is the longest-serving secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M) (1998 to 2015). He also served in the government of Kerala as Minister of Electric Power and Co-operatives from 1996 to 1998.

Vijayan won a seat in the May 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election as the CPI(M) candidate for Dharmadom constituency and was selected as the leader of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and became the 12th Chief Minister of Kerala. He is the first chief minister from Kerala to be re-elected after completing a full term (five years) in office

13. Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, often referred to as Mama is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is the 17th and current Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, having been elected to the same position 3 times in the past, and a Member of Legislative Assembly in Madhya Pradesh from Budhni. 

He previously served as the Chief Minister of the Madhya Pradesh, between 2005 and 2018, and holds the record as the state’s longest serving Chief Minister. He is also currently serving as a National Vice-president, member of the Parliamentary Board and a member of the Central Election Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

16. Conrad Sangma

A. Sangma. He was also the Member of Parliament from Tura (2016-2018)

17. Zoramthanga

Zoramthanga is an Indian politician who is the Chief Minister of Mizoram. He is the president of Mizo National Front (MNF) party. He had served as the Chief Minister of Mizoram from December 1998 to December 2008, for two consecutive terms. He was second-in-command to Laldenga during the secession movement of Mizo National Front, and became the successor as the party leader, after MNF was a recognised political party, following the death of Laldenga in 1990.

18. Neiphiu Rio

Neiphiu Guolhoulie Rio is an Indian politician serving as the 9th and Chief Minister of Nagaland. 19. Naveen Patnaik

Naveen Patnaik is an Indian politician serving as the current and 14th Chief Minister of Odisha. He is also the president of the Biju Janata Dal, a writer and has authored three books. He is the longest-serving chief minister of Odisha and as of 2022, one of the longest-serving chief ministers of any Indian state, holding the post for over two decades, and only the third Indian chief Minister after Pawan Chamling and Jyoti Basu to win five consecutive terms as Chief Minister of an Indian state.

21. Ashok Gehlot

23. M.K Stalin

Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, often referred to by his initials MKS is an Indian politician serving as the 8th and current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The son of the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Stalin has been the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party since 28 August 2018. He served as the 37th Mayor of Chennai from 1996 to 2002 and 1st Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 2009 to 2011.

24. Biplab Kumar Deb

Biplab Kumar Deb is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Tripura. He has been the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tripura since 7 January 2016 till 2018. He led the BJP to victory in the 2018 Legislative Assembly Election, defeating 25 years rule of the Left Front government led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He took his oath as the 10th Chief Minister of Tripura on 9 March 2018.

25. K. Chandrashekar Rao

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, often referred to by his initials KCR, is an Indian politician serving as the first and current Chief Minister of Telangana since 2014. He is the founder and leader of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, a regional party in Telangana, India. He is known for leading the Telangana movement to achieve statehood for Telangana. Previously, he served as the Union Minister of Labour and Employment from 2004 to 2006. He represents Gajwel constituency in the Legislative Assembly of Telangana. Rao took oath as the first Chief Minister of Telangana in 2014 and was re-elected for the second term in 2018.

27. Pushkar Singh Dhami

Pushkar Singh Dhami is an Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, serving as the 10th and the current Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. He was elected as MLA in Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha from Khatima in 2012 and 2017. He was appointed Chief Minister for the first time in 2021. He lost his seat in 2022 elections, but was re-elected as Chief Minister by BJP MLAs. He is the only Chief Minister of the state to win second consecutive term as CM since its creation.

28. Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician, poet and painter who is serving as the ninth and current chief minister of the Indian state of West Bengal since 20 May 2011, the first woman to hold the office. Having served many times as a Union Cabinet Minister, Mamata Banerjee became the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the first time in 2011. She founded the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC) in 1998 after separating from the Indian National Congress, and became its first chairperson. She is often referred to as ‘Didi’ (meaning elder sister in Bengali).
